Ever wondered what it would be like to step inside a fairytale and the live the life of the princess for a day?
Well, I have and each time I imagine it, it sends me in to deep longing. Much to my dismay, it’s not quite possible and although I think my life is turning out to be a real modern-sort of fairytale, I still find myself admiring those princess dresses and dreamy castles. (I’m pointing fingers at my mother for reading me bed time stories of dragons and magic and taking me to castle ruins my whole childhood.) From my previous ethereal shoot, where I had so many people talk to me about fairytales and a little girl asked me for a photo, because she thought I was a real princess, I know i’m not the only who would gracefully jump at the opportunity of being a fairytale princess for a day.
Whilst I highly doubt a magical wizard is going to whisk you away to fairyland, (and if someone does approach you claiming this, say no and run!) there are achievable ways in reaching that impossible fantasy. Despite their issues with feminism, we can all learn a lot from the princess in our books and although we cannot be them, we can be like them. As often stated, being yourself is very important but to also understand that there is always room for growth. Aurora, from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, can teach us so much and despite her falling asleep for a long time and waiting for a man to come save her, she’s still pretty wonderful in her own slumberous way.
Here’s how to channel your inner Aurora…
Make friends with the forest
For the first sixteen years of her life, Aurora lives in a cottage with three fairies that are so ditzy- you wonder how the princess even survived that long. However, she finds refuge in the forest the cottage lies upon with a hooting owl as her friend. Aurora’s compassionate heart speaks in the language of flowers and despite her being royalty, she is more known as a ‘forest princess’ over a ‘castle with servants’ type. As you can see, I portrayed both sides of Sleeping Beauty by shooting in this incredible location, the overgrown nature wrapping around white walls creates the perfect contrast. If you can find somewhere similar, that speaks to your inner Sleeping beauty, then darling, you’ve got this in the bag of finely spun gold. (oops wrong fairytale!)
Just make sure there aren’t any Spinning Wheels hidden anywhere.
Craft a dress made of dreams
Aurora embodies grace, elegance and ethereal beauty and this is portrayed in her appearance. I found the most perfect dress that I’m certain was hand crafted by fairies and sprinkled with wishes, casted by the purest of hearts. Have you seen anything more enchanting?
JJSHouse is a company based in Hong Kong specialising in wedding and occasion dresses at an affordable price. Don’t be fooled by the site feeling a little shifty- this is a legit brand and a quick flicker through the thousands of reviews will put your mind at ease. Their huge range of dresses means that there is literally a dress for everyone. What I love about this brand is that you can choose from a large range of colours and pay a small extra charge to get the dress made in a custom measurement. Moreover, their products are made with high quality materials, the sewing is immaculate and the photos are true to how they look in real life. Thus, you may be buying overseas but their products are durable and will last you a long time so if you buy wisely, you won’t be creating waste by throwing it away after one wear.
When I spotted this enchanting gown, Sleeping Beauty immediately popped into my head. I went with the dusty rose colour for a feminine soft finish that wasn’t too vibrant or loud- reflecting the kind and gentle personality of Aurora. The long sleeves give off a gown-like look; perfect for sleeping! Moreover, the lace detail paired with the tulle skirt gives the impression that the dress is very expensive (it really wasn’t!) and fit for royalty.
Lovely luscious locks with minimal detail is exactly what sleeping beauty is all about. Everything needs to have an effortless finish, thus, don’t bother dying it! If you’re not a blondie like me then don’t worry, what makes Sleeping beauty isn’t the colour of her hair, but the beauty of her heart…. and lots of sleeping.
I curled my hair with a large barrel for a soft texture, ensuring it was messy to enhance the natural nature of the princess. I then twisted a piece on either side of my face and pinned them to the back of my head ensuring the bobby pins were not visible. This is a great go-to Princess look that doesn’t require skilled hands. More importantly, it’s not going to be utterly uncomfortable when you are sent to sleep for one-hundred years.
Go Au Natural
As we have already established, Sleeping Beauty is all about natural beauty. Minimal makeup is best with lots of nude colours that match your skin tone. I started by skipping out on the foundation and applying a light hydrating cream before using some light concealer and a flush of pink on the cheeks. I swept on some pink eyeshadow for the shoot but really this is a little too extra for Sleeping Beauty. Instead, it’s better to just focus on the mascara to achieve beautiful, dark, fluttery lashes that are ready to take flight into dreamland. All the makeup I used was with cruelty free brand Illamasqua.
Walk like you’re on a path made out of stars
Sleeping Beauty is a kind and gentle soul that mirrors the silent beauty of the moon; powerful in it’s quiet. There is much to learn from the way Aurora carries herself. A symbol of grace, elegance, kindness and pose. She has a gentle, caring voice with patience for all. Take note and practice these key skills.
Catch up on your beauty sleep
Speaking of sleep, ensure that you are getting plenty of rest. You are Sleeping Beauty after all! Don’t think they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing, a lack of sleep is proven to have serious effects on your health and generally makes you look less attractive. So go forth Princess and rest upon thy Royal Chambers.
Be kind to nature
Even when old fairytales oppress women and were once used to hold power over society, they still taught us one of the most important lessons one should not ignore; to be kind to all living things, both great and small.
Every Princess is seen sprinkling kindness around like falling stardust and this does not exclude the plants and animals that we share the earth with. Be respectful to all walks of life and consider going Vegan and say no to animal cruelty! Only invest in cruelty free beauty products and gain back your compassion. Grow flowers and plants in your garden and allow your soul to become kinder, more in tune with the earth, just like sweet Sleeping Beauty.
Which Fairytale would you like me to recreate next?
