If you are a regular read of EternallyElle or follow me on social media, you may know how much I adore ‘Alice in Wonderland’. As a creative who admires innovation and whimsical finesse, this story is a constant source of inspiration for me. As such, I have been pining over creating a Wonderland inspired shoot or two and finally we have done just that. Alice in Wonderland narrates some incredible characters that it was difficult to choose my first. However, with the Summer months quickly on their way and the roses inevitably blooming for a short period of time, it only made sense to curate my own version of the Queen of hearts.
The Queen is referred to as a card from a pack of playing cards by Alice, yet somehow she is able to talk and is the ruler of the lands in the story, alongside her husband, the King of Hearts. This character is quite the villain, whom thoroughly enjoys beheading Wonderlanders and is rather passionate about jam tarts. Unlike many of the other characters in Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts is not as concerned with nonsense and perversions of logic as she is with absolute rule and execution. Although the Queen is a despicable villain, I enjoy the power and authority she holds. Whilst we certainly learn plenty from the heroes in novels, there is also much to learn from the villain too. Consequently, I thought it would be enjoyable to share my perception on this renowned character.
Here are my five favourite lessons from the Queen of Hearts…
Jam tarts can solve anything
Forget the chocolate, it’s really jam tarts that are the answer. If you are having a bad day, indulge in these simple pastries and blissfully bask in the relief as your problems fade away.
The only problem is that these scrumptious snacks are so delicious, you may need to keep an eye on them or someone may steal these delectable treats … You really cannot trust the help these days.
Ravishing in red
One of the best things the queen of hearts has taught us is the power of a red dress. Although this Wonderland character isn’t someone I would personally sought out to become (and I wouldn’t recommend it either) she certainly has a wardrobe to aspire towards. Whilst I understand this may be a little difficult to implement into everyday wear, when it comes to special occasions, taking a heart out of this Queen’s book would be a great idea.
This stunning dress from JJSHOUSE has essentially inspired this whole shoot. As soon as I spotted it, the red queen immediately sprung to mind. The diamante detailing paired with the delicate damask embroidery screams “off with her head!” Moreover the layered tulle and ballgown style really channels a sophisticated royal vibe. I was initially tempted to add a crown, which would certainly add to the arrogance that the Queen of Hearts so wilfully exudes. However, I felt that it may look too harsh in a rose garden and I still wanted to feel a little ‘Eloise-like’. Regardless of the lack of accessories, I think we can all agree that this design is exquisite. Moreover, it comes from an impressive brand that offer unique features, such as choosing from an extensive variety of colours in each dress design and even having their products tailored to your figure! Not to mention that JJSHOUSE also have an incredible variety of occasion dresses, and thus, they really do cater for everyone. Red lipstick is your successor
Who needs an heir to the throne when you can simply apply a designer red lipstick and call it a day?
Whilst the queen of hearts sports the iconic red heart shape painted over the center of her lips, I wanted to elevate the look to a vibe that felt more ‘Haute couture’. Therefore, I applied my favourite red lipstick as I would any other. I used Illamasqua’s red lip ‘Maneater’ as, not only do I love this product for the luscious red shade that works perfectly for my skin tone, but these lipstick’s are a cut above the rest. The reason why I think they are so superior is simply because I have yet to come across a lip product that truly stays on throughout the day without any requirement for reapplication. Moreover, this lipstick is cruelty free which I think is very important to support. Regardless of the lip shade, Illamasqua’s lipsticks are highly pigmented, glide on smoothly and are guaranteed to give you a flawless finish. I really couldn’t recommend this product more.
Stand up for yourself
There is no doubt that the Queen of hearts is a bully.
Whilst accepting others for their flaws is a quality everyone should pursue, it is important to be intolerant towards those whom will take advantage and abuse you. This is perhaps my favourite counter-lesson from this character; often there will be horrid people in power and it is vital that you don’t allow them to mistreat you. The Queen of Hearts looks down on Alice from the moment they meet, similar to the bullies in our world. However, Alice soon discovered that this dreadful being only had a pack-of-cards following her, which gave Alice a new perception; if she does not allow the aggressors in her life to hold power over her, they cannot hurt her.
Don’t paint the roses red
If you mistakingly plant white roses instead of red ones, it is advisable not to paint them. Whilst it is both innovative and dim-wittingly stupid, covering up your mistakes instead of admitting to them isn’t going to get you far in life. Hopefully, this is only due to a fear of failure rather than a fear of loosing your head. However, it is much wiser to take responsibility of the things you have done wrong and to learn from them. It is also vital that you are kind to yourself during this process. Don’t make excuses or beat yourself up over your faults. We are all human and making mistakes is simple a part of life.
