3 steps to putting together perfect picnic attire
The term picnic originated from the French word picque-nique, its meaning very similar to how we refer to the concept of picnic as a social gathering of leisurely eating. In a nutshell, a picnic is a spontaneous, carefree and uncomplicated adventure. Moreover, there is some very special about scouting out a picture perfect location and relishing in the beautiful surroundings, good company and indulging into simple, decadent dishes. A picnic is really one of the lost treasures of modern society; A blissful moment where you can break away from everyday life.
Despite the carefree nature of a picnic, putting together a great outfit isn’t as easy. Sitting down under the summer heat for hours on end is only going to be as relaxing as the clothes you are wearing. Follow this guide to ensure you are picnic prepped and achieve a successful ensemble for this essential Spring/Summer activity.
The vibe– Casual, comfortable, light and cooling.
Picnics involve a lot of sitting down on a blanket so ensure that you are wearing a dress that is comfortable, with a longer hem and tight neckline to avoid any accidental flashing.
Choose an easy, airy dress
Whilst picnics come with plenty of joy, they can also bring plenty of fashion disasters. Accidentally revealing too much skin can be quite common if you haven’t carefully considered your dress choice. Admittedly, I would choose a cute playsuit for a picnic, however, picnic season is during the hottest months of the year so a dress is a common choice. They can also be a great picnic candidate but you must choose wisely.
The best thing about picnic attire is that they are the perfect activities to show off your spontaneity. Whilst I have presented a very basic dress as my personal outfit of choice (loyal readers will know I adore timeless fashion), this really is a great opportunity to opt for your most colourful dress sitting in your wardrobe. If you’ve been itching to prance around in your new floral rose midi or have been patiently waiting to dress up in that oversized flare sleeved t-shirt dress, then now is the time to do it!
It is also worth noting that picnics typically involve a lot of sitting on the ground. Hence why I would recommend you avoid wearing white at all costs. Even with a blanket, grass stains will mysteriously appear, (talking with experience) and it’s really not a look you want to be wearing. Moreover, sitting on a grassy hill will mean your dress hem will naturally hike upwards. Therefore, I strongly suggest that you choose a dress that is no shorter than knee-length. In addition, ensure that the neckline is tightly fitted, should you choose something similar to the sweet-heart design I am wearing. It may be wise to sit down in front of a mirror and check that all accidental mishaps have minimal chance of occurring.
Straw for Summer
It’s a no brainer. Long hours sitting under the glorious sunshine is going to burn your skin and potentially cause headaches. Therefore, I suggest you invest in a straw hat. Not only will this simple accessory protect you from the sun’s rays but a summer hat looks über chic. They come in array of style and designs so you should have no problem looking for one that suits your style.
Ballet Flats: Your Picnic BFFS
Whilst sinking in to the ground might have sounded exciting as a creative game during your childhood, reality paints a different picture. When you are attempting to serve up those delicious jam tarts you cooked up in the kitchen, whilst your heels are sinking deep in to the grass, you will probably question every life decision that led you to this moment. There is a time and a place for a pair of sky high stilettos but this is not one of those moments. I can assure you, all glamour – these wardrobe staples usually achieve- will instantly disappear. Flats are your best friends at picnics. Not only will a pair of flats allow true comfort but they can really enhance the femininity of your dress. Particularly ballet flats.
As I am still on the hunt for some beautifully made, Chanel inspired, Vegan-friendly ballet shoes, I’ve settled on a slick pair of cross straps, which I highly recommend as they are more secure than a simple pair of ballet pumps and will ensure your feet don’t fall out whilst laying on your picnic blanket.

Please note that I will always share my honest, genuine thoughts no matter what. I wanted to collaborate with this brand to see how the quality of their products measured up to my high standards. Whilst the garments I have featured on this brand are good quality I found that their quality was overall, very unpredictable. As such I wouldn’t recommend the brand as you could very easily end up with a poorly made garment that will fall apart in a few wears. Very unsustainable for the planet!
